what is the password for access to system ?

    1. exton exton says:

LOG IN to LXQt repectively KDE
You can only run ExTiX live as root. Log in from Slim‘s Login Manager as root with password root in the LXQt version. Or as regards the KDE version; from console mode. Run startx to enter X/KDE. Press Ctrl Alt F1 if you don’t end up in console mode after the boot process. During a hard drive installation you will get the opportunity to create a normal user.

I received the following message upon updating the newly installed ExTix KDE system:

“A new version of the configuration file ‘/etc/issue’ is available, but your version has been modified. Would you like to keep your current version or install the new version?”

I’m going to defer to keep the current modified one since I’m not sure what I should actually do. I’m pretty certain I’ll see this message again when I have to update by which time I’m sure I will have heard from you or read somewhere about what I should do. Looking forward to your reply.

    1. William says:

there were four additional messages referring to modified files in order to finish the updating process. I chose to keep all of the old files since I wasn’t sure what I should actually do. I wanted to mention the additional notices which I had received during the update process. Thanks!

    2. exton exton says:

The message doesn’t really matter. (/etc/issue will be changed from ExTiX to Ubuntu if you choose to “install the new version”).

Well this an old post but for newbies like my self!!! I learned about the ArchWiki and this is a good place to start https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SLiM then read the subheading “Set default username and Enable Autologin”
Worked Great and this is the Best Distro!!!

The Extix LXQT is a speedy work of art! But when I use pulse my sound card is not recognized. I’ve tried three Extix distros and the result is the same – absolutely zero sound of any kind. My card: SB0770 – Creative Labs X-FI 7.1 Extreme Gamer. Any help would be really appreciated as I would like to replace Ubuntu with this distro. Thanks for all your work!

    1. exton exton says:

Your card seems to be a “difficult” one. I found this remark about it: Here’s the thing: This card is an OEM model. Essentially this means that this specific sound card was meant for inclusion in pre-made computers made by other companies (Dell, Alienware, etc). It was never meant to be sold on its own. Because of this, Creative does not support the card. In point of fact, if you look for it the SB0770 isn’t even listed on their site. There are NO OFFICIAL DRIVERS for the SB0770 released in the past 5 years or so. If you are looking for a card to run with a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer, look elsewhere, because there are no native drivers for this card whatsoever. Creative support is of no help. Google is no help either. If your system does not automatically recognize it, its only use to you is as a paperweight.

      Doesn’t look good. Sorry.

After 5 attempts finally installed Extix. Sourceforge file had problems but Swedish file worked ok. Before testing distros I look for 3 things: Will it recognise my wifi card, will it recognise my printer, will it support my NVidia card?
Wifi card recognised but continually dropping offline, a problem common to other Ubuntu distros but not Debian or Mint.
I could not find anywhere to install a printer. Why has this problem not come up before?
Nvidia drivers are in the repository but could not test without a secure wifi connection.

    1. exton exton says:

Nvidia: Driver 352.30 is already installed. It has support for the following GPUs: Quadro K1200, Quadro M6000, GeForce 920M, GeForce 930A, GeForce 930M, GeForce 940M, GeForce GTX 950M, GeForce GTX 960M and GeForce GTX TITAN X. This driver will be used automatically if your card is supported.

There is nothing wrong with the ISO file at SourceForge.net. Just checked to download the ISO from there. (And md5sum).

Hi. ExTix is very, very nice. Thanks for it!

Question: is there a weather widget for the panel? This is really important for me.

    Thanks!

    1. exton exton says:

No, but in the KDE version you can easily enable such a widget.

I tried to install ExTix LxQT 15.4 (from swedish download site) with system booting to RAM.
At the end of the installation process after user config it wants to install
additional files but complains that CD isnt mounted and installation hangs :-(.
I did a new install with system running from cd and everything went fine.
    Very nice distro, thanks …

    1. exton exton says:

Ok. Yes you can’t install it while running from RAM.

  14. gertjan says:

The url in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list for the Google repo does not work I changed it from:
    deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ wily main
    to:
    deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main
    Now it works.

    1. exton exton says:

      Ok. Thanks for sharing!

  15. Simon says:

Hi! I cant boot the system form a USB key, I have an UEFI system and I have tryed all the possible procedures under linux (the normal one and the persistent one) also I have tryed by myself using dd.
I have tryed also several SanDisk and Kingstone usb keys in witch I have never had problems with other distrubutions.
Maybe the problmem is that I need a UEFI bootable iso image?
    Thank you for your work.
    Simone

    1. Simon says:

Of course I am referring to the latest version: 16.1

    2. exton exton says:

      It works believe me.

Either you haven’t been able to download an error-free ISO file or your BIOS settings are wrong.

It has nothing to do with UEFI. Just make your changes in BIOS. View this screenshot from one of my computers.

Please note that you can use UNetbootin in Windows or Linux. See a picture how it looks before the installation starts in Windows 10. NOTE: You must replace syslinux.cfg in the root of the stick with this file. (Also so you can enjoy persistence and run ExTiX in RAM).

  16. rwk says:

It was only Jan, 2016 that I became aware of Extix. So far I have installed Extix to a hard drive, as a live usb stick, and as a persistent usb drive. Those two “ingenious scripts” drove me crazy until I found out they no longer work.

I am interested to know if you are testing Extix 16.01 with kernel44 on skylake hardware. I now have a skylake system with Win 10. (Win 10 mainly because Linux support is questionable) Win 10 is installed on a sata ssd. I am saving an m.2 ssd for Linux. From what I read, Linux skylake support is not yet ready. Is Extix 16.1 ready for skylake hardware?

  17. smilzino says:

    Hi,
I have installed Extix on my hard drive. My problem is that on the desktop are showned the folders of my / partition. Also I would liket to know if is it possible to install the xfce desktop on this distro. Thanks

    1. exton exton says:

About the folders I have no answer. You must have done something wrong during the installation.

You can install Xfce or any other Desktop environment.

  18. jenom says:

after a not-too-big download I am trying Trying EXTIX 16.1 from an USB memory

    PROS:
-it boots very fast and everything runs faster than usual: gparted, synaptic, etc…
-had no problem to detect a wifi adapter on my Lenovo laptop
    -based on latest UBUNTU willy
    CONS:
    -no bluetooth support installed
-also this is a first linux distro without a sound volume control anywhere
-strange to see the LibreOffice 5 was installed only with “writer” and “math”
either install the complete office suit or not install at all (my preference)

    Conclusion:
once the mentioned issues fixed, I would love to give it another try

    1. exton exton says:

      jenom,

Thanks for testing ExTiX and your review. I will add Bluetooth support and a sound volume control in the next version.

Buenas noches, quiero usar desde usb, pero me pide siempre pasword, por favor me pueden decir cuan es gracias

    1. exton exton says:

      LOG IN to LXQt/KDE
You can run ExTiX live as root (superuser) or as the ordinary user extix. Log in from Slim‘s Login Manager as root with password root in the LXQt version or as extix with no password. During a hard drive installation you will get the opportunity to create your own normal user. When logged in as extix you can use Sudo to become root. (Command: sudo su).

  20. Sol y Tierra says:

Primero, gracias por la respuesta, hago todos los pasos, pero nada, me sigue pidiendo username y pasword, estos paso los hago desde el usb, pero nada, siempre me termina pidiendo username y pasword, cual otra sería la solución?

    1. exton exton says:

See my previous answer. If you can’t log in something is wrong with your USB installation.

  21. RoyD says:

Just downloaded ExTix 16.1. Looks great, but how do you install a printer? I can’t see any of the usual links used in other Ubuntu/Debian based distro’s. Please help.

  22. Jeffrey Needle says:

Hi. I’m very frustrated with a feature of the LXqt desktop. I’ve updated ExTix completely.

I want to configure the apps launched by Quicklaunch. I go to the screen where you manage widgets, highlight “Quicklauncher”, then click on “Configure,” and nothing happens! Very frustrating. Can you help? Thanks.

  23. Jeffrey Needle says:

Still no answer to this? I’ve discovered that, if you drag an app from the menu to the home screen, you can then drag it on to the quick launcher. It works with other distros, but not with ExTix. When I drag the app to the home screen, and select “Copy here”, I get a useless pop-up box. Try doing that and you’ll see what I mean.

I do hope you decide to fix this asap. Thanks.

    1. exton exton says:

      Jeffery,

Yes, you can do that when running other Desktop environments, but not when using LXQt. I don’t know how to fix it. Perhaps it’s a sort of “bug” in LXQt (which isn’t totally “stable”).

  24. Jeffrey Needle says:

Why is Thunderbird such an old version? 31? They’re way ahead in the repos for other distros. Can someone let me know how to change the repos so that my software is up to date? Thanks.

    1. exton exton says:

In ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Thunderbird is in version 38.8.0 (latest as of May, 2016). See installed packages…

In ExTiX 16.4 KDE Thunderbird isn’t pre-installed. See installed packages…

    2. exton exton says:

      Jeffery,

As an alternative you can install “my” kernel 4.8.0-21-exton. (Kernel 4.8). You won’t have any problems to install any program which need kernel headers.

Be sure to install Nvidia’s proprietary graphics driver 370.28. (Otherwise you will get problems with needed patches).
